Days of Charm and Detritus

The charm and detritus
Of each day’s work
Each day’s play
Transforms letters words
Lines pages journals
Poetry hung out like
Last week’s laundry on
A sunny Saturday afternoon

Irony

There is a problem with irony in its
Confused design and geography
Neither destination nor foundation
Avoiding pluses and minuses
Spending time between the two
A tight smirk never a chuckle
The superior lips pursed just so
Across an otherwise nondescript
Profile back lit in the study

Brahma Creates

Brahma lying on the lotus blinks
Ah, another universe
Brahma lying on the lotus blinks
Ah, another universe
Brahma lying on the lotus blinks
Ah, another universe
Brahma lying on the lotus blinks
Ah, another universe

Watch Out

If you do not take care,
now, remembering then,
could ruin everything:
all of your plans since
this morning’s breakfast
at the local diner with
eggs over easy, home fries,
a side of bacon, coffee,
buttered toast, little
plastic packages of jam.
Maybe it is time for lunch?

Bookish Apartment

Books strewn around the floor
individually, in twos and threes,
some opened, as if sharing
stories with one another,
some closed, dozing off
in the slant afternoon light
of the fourth floor walk up,
once a tenement filled with
recently arrived languages,
the words shared hope
for better, safer times
to make a life just like
the reader of these books
strewn around the floor
of the fourth floor walk up.
