Poems

Poem to Myself

Don't kid yourself, my boy,
That your poem will do anything,
Change anything, amount to anything.
That stanza that you think will make it all clear
To the rest of the world is obtuse and besides
It doesn't even rhyme.

No, don't try to make your mark
With poetry, learn to paint, maybe.
Or better still, become a firefighter,
A surgeon, a realtor. Then you will
Have an impact on humanity.
Then you will have a legacy.

Your poem, at best, will make folks laugh,
Give them a respite from the realities of life.
In rare cases, it might change you.
Turn you into a poet.
But don't write to change the world
Not if you truly want to.

kauai Haiku 7 Dec

Seek and hide and seek
Endlessly run round and round
Banyan tree children

Upon Reading Hafiz

I spent an entire day in the presence of God
I asked for it and God gifted me with it
Allah, Father, Great Spirit, Adonai, God, Great Brooding Mother Hen
Lover, Creator, Sustainer God
Filled me
And God's angels stood, walked, lay beside me

At times like this
The fall of a leaf
The song of a bird
The purr of a cat
The sound of a violin
The twinkle of a star
The variety of faces
Your poem

Causes me to overflow
Those tears flowing down my cheeks
They are love that cannot be contained.

presence

Her absence is so ominous
I wonder what it bodes for us;
and is it just coincidence
(I never doubt my Spidey-sense)
that soon the Mayan calendar
expires, but we don't hear from her?
Perhaps she's doomsday prepping
and that circumvents her stepping
to her trusty ol' computers
while she guards the home from looters.
But that seems a little drastic
(truth is often less fantastic);
I'm sure she wants to stop and write
but making time's an endless fight.

absent

just a while ago it seemed
each week at least, if not each day
new words, new lines, a voice from here
now silent for four months or more
i can’t complain, i run dry too, but yet i
feel her absence here, if
e'er she were to post again
rejoice I would, or even cheer
